Adaptive leadership

Leadership is acting in a way that mobilises other people to work hard and solve the problems that are important to them, which may seem frightening and dangerous to them.

This concept of leadership is taught at Harvard Kennedy School, where R. Heifetz, one of the adaptive leadership authors, resides and teaches. The school seeks to ensure that leadership is not only a popular topic of seminars but also a professional discipline. They demonstrate a fundamental approach to the topic and define which problems can be solved by leadership, how a manager’s work and a leader’s work are different, and what ways to act as a leader and learn to be a leader are available.

Every organisation wants to flourish. Living in volatility and being able to change for the sake of long-term flourishing are becoming a desired acting method of organisations. However! Despite the frequent talks that things should be done differently, people tend to act the way they are used to. They find it difficult to reshape their thinking, habits and skills. As a result, the ability of organisations to adapt to the challenges posed by the environment is limited. It is because of these differences that some organisations achieve their goals, evolve, and flourish. Other organisations are bound to follow them and face the threat of extinction.

The adaptive leadership principles that we promote:

Leadership is acting that mobilises other people to work hard and solve problems that are important to them, which may seem frightening and dangerous to them. “Power and influence in today’s companies have less to do with employees’ positions on the organisational chart and more to do with their ability to energise others in their organisational networks” (Wayne Baker, Harvard University).

  • Leadership means action rather than attitude.
  • Leadership can be implemented by anyone, anywhere, anytime.
  • Leadership starts with yourself and must involve others.
  • You must know clearly what you want to achieve.
  • It is risky.
